“EU Projects and SEO” article is related to using SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for your EU funded project to provide sustainable free traffic from search engines. As L4Y, we are using our SEO knowledge for dissemination in our KA2 project Forest Fire Protection which is in Turkish, German, Portuguese, Greek, Italian, Spanish, and Bahasa (Indonesian language)

EU Projects and SEO: Why SEO

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) knowledge is the only way to be on the first page in search results. It is essential for EU Projects because of dissemination. SEO statistics show to be on the first page is vital to reaching people (target group);

“Google uses 200+ factors in its algorithm for ranking websites” – Backlinko.

The #1 search result in Google gets approximately 32% of all user clicks” – Backlinko

Only 0.78% of Google users click on results from the 2nd page” – Backlinko.

Whatever you do online, you will need this skill. As a youth organisation, we are eager to train youth in this skill to improve employability. It is an easy and free way to follow and reach their target groups for most SMEs and NGOs who do not have much to spend.

L4Y recognized that almost none of the EU projects are SEO-friendly content. Therefore, they can not reach the target group using free organic traffic from search engines. It is a waste of high-quality content they created by not using this opportunity. All SEO-friendly content in all partner languages will get free organic traffic from search engines regarding user searches in partner countries, which is not that effective, being on the first page of search results in English only.

It is so easy that there is no reason NOT to use it (SEO Friendly Post Creation)

Here are some more statistics for 2022;

Only 5.7% of pages rank in the top 10 search results within the first year of publication

We have realised the above statistics even better;

Almost 60% of the pages ranking in the top 10 Google results are at least 3 years old

It means you need time to be on the first page.

The ideal blog post length for most posts is between 1,500 and 2,500 words

Ryan Robinson

Therefore, the longer content is better.

The first 5 organic results in the search engine results pages (SERPs) account for 67.6% of all clicks

Zero Limit Web

A Proof

We have experienced this with some SEO knowledge on our Turkish website, ABGenclik.com. There are 20 posts, and 18 of them are on the first pages. Most of them are in rank #1. The search results change in time (positively most of the time.) Location is another factor that affects rank. You can check what we did on that website; Links are Google results pages for our focus keyphrases of each post. Check our URL to see where they are;

However, to be on the first page in English posts is extremely difficult but possible.

  • effective promotional strategies (not good position)
  • Ad Scenario (not good place)
  • EU YouTH Website is on page 9
  • Erasmus+ Project Writing (1.2) is the second post on the first page
  • KA210 PIF (1.1) is the first post on the first page
  • SEO-friendly post creation (2) would be on the second page even if it were created a few days ago (better to check using a new incognito window)

Meanwhile, in local languages, you will be more successful in SEO

Check our FFP project Live SEO report page

We have more promising results on the Turkish website ABGenclik.com than on the English one; In conclusion, out of 20 posts, we have 18 first page results and 10 of them in the #1 position on the first page.

Why disseminate

In European projects, the term “dissemination” indicates the set of actions and strategies aimed at disseminating information on the results of the project to maximize its impact on individuals, entities, and communities. This is essential as it facilitates the transfer of results and their use by a wider audience.

How to disseminate the results: To maximize its impact and reach new audiences, it is advisable to make the most of social channels and adopt a balanced mix of online and offline communication tools: website, workshops, seminars, conferences, press releases, audiovisual and multimedia products, public events, contacts and existing networks.

Some EU projects take advantage of it. Even while searching for “why dissemination is important for the EU”, you can reach them first. Indeed, they are using SEO. For instance, some projects are not successful in getting target groups; even the evaluation points are high. If nobody can reach your project results, what is your reason for implementing that project?

Dissemination means sharing research results with potential users – peers in the research field, industry, other commercial players and policymakers). By sharing your research results with the rest of the scientific community, you are contributing to the progress of science in general.

Dissemination & Exploitation of results

Another essential point is that it is almost impossible to get the grant without providing a good dissemination plan and sustainability. If you consider SEO in dissemination and sustainability questions in writing your proposal, your chance will increase. For instance, we are using it even in our PIF (see “Why do each Erasmus+ projects need SEO” )

How to use SEO in your EU projects

You need to know websites are your main assets. Social media helps to support them.

Social Media

Consequently, the role of social media is to support websites. As a result, give backlinks to your websites in each of your shares on your social media channels. If you explain to partners why the project needs it clearly, they will help.

Organic search results in over 53.3% of all website traffic

Firstly, for an SEO-friendly website, we need technical SEO;

  • fast host service,
  • lightweight theme,
  • some plug-ins that speeds-up loading time

Secondly, qualified content and many backlinks (external or internal links but not manipulating the algorithm, natural backlinks). It is easy to create internal links in the posts.

Finally, for EU projects, there is no qualification problem of content. As a result, we need backlinks. Therefore, do not hesitate to ask your partners to link their websites to the main (English version) website and their local project website. After that, It creates a high impact on the first page. The more backlinks you have, the higher places in the rank you will get.
